Pacific Drum DW DP402 Bass Drum Pedal Review
A Solid First 2-Step
Something unfortunate happens at times to those who start with the absolute best equipment available. They aren’t ready for the complexity of the very best, and they give up on the pursuit entirely. It is better to start with the basics, and if the skill level grows, then the gear and technique can advance with it. That’s why stock car drivers started in go-carts, and concert pianists began with “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” And that is the story behind the Pacific Drum DW DP402 double bass drum pedal. It is a very good unit for those just learning drums, or making the step to a double pedal. High end units feature multiple customizing options that are second nature to an experienced player, but offer too many choices for the novice, and get in the way of mastering the fundamentals. The DW DP402, not available in a single, still offers reliable playability, but does not have as many fine tuneable parts as advanced pedals. Solid steel plates give action to 2-way beaters through a basic chain and cam drive system. The spring is tension-adjustable, however, so the beginner can start getting a feel for their personal style.
The DW DP402 double bass drum pedal works well for jazz, pop, and light rock. It is a good beginner pedal at an entry level price. It probably will not exhibit the endurance of more advanced pedals, and extreme speed is not its thing, but if you know all this going in, you might be very happy using it to get rolling.
